Reminder: Attendance and Absences (from the Parent-Student Handbook)
What counts as an unexcused absence? Unexcused absences are determined by the Head of School. Family trips and extended vacations are typically unexcused. If you’re planning travel, please email Ms. Yacono at least one week in advance.
Schoolwork during unexcused absences:
Teachers are not required to provide make-up work for unexcused absences and may not award credit for work completed while a student is unexcused.
Attendance Probation (trimester-based):
A student will be placed on Attendance Probation if they reach:
-
6+ unexcused absences, or
- 12+ unexcused tardies, or
- Any combination totaling 12 unexcused absences/tardies.
-
Three or more Early Dismissals in a trimester count as tardies and accrue toward the thresholds above.
Parents will be notified by GSA at 4 unexcused absences and/or 8 unexcused tardies in a trimester. If the maximum is exceeded, Ms. Yacono will contact you and place the student on Attendance Probation. Eighth graders on probation in Trimester 2 or 3 may not be permitted to graduate on time.
Ongoing impact:
Two or more trimesters on probation may affect re-enrollment for the following year.
A student is removed from probation the next trimester if the record improves (fewer than six unexcused absences or tardies).
Probation in Trimester 3 continues into the following Fall.
How records are kept:
The Front Office and teachers record all absences and tardies throughout the year.
Thank you for helping us maintain strong, consistent attendance. If you have questions or need to report an absence, please contact the Front Office.
