Picture Day - September 15th

Picture Day is right around the corner–Monday, September 15th. We are excited about having a new photographer this year who will take all of the students’ pictures in one day. Be sure to send your daughter to school in her usual Monday uniform–white polo shirt and blue skirt/shorts/pants. Check out some picture tips from our photographer here!

Announcing Theme Parade 2025

One of GSA’s most beloved traditions is our annual Theme Parade! Think of it as a playful twist on Halloween that invites students to bring our school theme to life through creativity and imagination.

This year’s parade will take place on Friday, October 31, and the theme is:

                            “Once Upon a What If?"

Students are encouraged to dream big with their costumes, whether that means dressing as a future inventor, an imaginative mastermind, or a character from a fantastical world.

A few reminders about costumes:

  • Costumes should be respectful and culturally responsible.
  • Please avoid altering skin color or hair to represent another race.
  • Do not imitate cultural or religious identities.
  • No weapons of any kind, real or pretend, are permitted.

Throughout the year, GSA will continue age-appropriate conversations about cultural appreciation versus appropriation as we learn how to celebrate cultures thoughtfully and respectfully.

Costume Inspiration: Once Upon a What If?

Need some ideas for a Theme Parade costume? Here are a few fun “What if…” twists to get your imagination going:

What if I lived the future?
Imagine yourself as a time traveler, a space explorer or a scientist who solves climate change.

What if stories had a twist?
Reimagine fairy tales where the princess saves herself, a dragon is the hero, or mashup a few of Grimm's classics.

What if history changed course?
Cleopatra as a mathematician, Sojourner Truth as a future president, or Ada Lovelace launching rockets to Mars.

What if ordinary became extraordinary?
Teachers with magical powers (which they already have, frankly!), athletes with time-travel sneakers, and young designers who change the rules of the game.

The possibilities are limitless—we can’t wait to see what you dream up!

A New Approach to Student Assessments at GSA

This year, GSA is moving from the ERB CTP to the MAP Growth assessment. MAP Growth better matches our curriculum and gives teachers (and parents!) clearer insight into student progress throughout the year.

Students in grades K–8 will take Reading, Language Usage, and Math assessments three times a year, starting in September. The test is adaptive, so each child’s experience is tailored to their level — giving us a fuller picture of their strengths and growth.

You can read more about this change in a detailed letter from Ms.Yacono here.

Handbook Acknowledgment Forms

The 2025-2026 Parent-Student Handbooks were distributed this week. Each year we require parents to sign the Handbook Acknowledgment Form. Please sign and submit your Handbook Acknowledgement Form by Monday, September 15. You can access our 2025-2026 handbook by clicking the link below, and you can also pick one up from the front office if you would like a physical copy.

One Nation Youth Choir Auditions

Does your daughter love to sing? GSA Middle Schoolers have been invited to audition for the One Nation Youth Choir, a premier vocal ensemble bringing together talented young voices from across Central Texas. Open to students in grades 6–12, the choir offers advanced vocal training, exciting performance opportunities, and even national exposure through concerts, recordings, and music videos.

This collaboration with the Austin School for the Performing and Visual Arts represents a wonderful opportunity for GSA to partner with a mission-aligned organization while also expanding our fine arts offerings for students.

Auditions will be held by appointment on Thursday, September 4, 2025. Register for auditions here.
