White Cane Day on October 16

GSA will be joining TSBVI (Texas School for the Blind and Visually Impaired) to celebrate the 22nd Annual White Cane Day on Wednesday, October 16, 2024!

The mission of White Cane Day is to educate the world about blindness and how the blind and visually impaired can live and work independently while giving back to their communities. This day also celebrates the abilities and successes achieved by blind individuals in a sighted world, honoring the many contributions being made by the blind and visually impaired.

The plan is for all 4th - 8th Graders to meet at Central Market (on 38th and Lamar) instead of being dropped off at school on October 16. We will have a bus on-site for storing backpacks and personal items. Students and teachers will join the walk to TSBVI, listen to speakers, enjoy the festivities, and shuttle back to GSA by bus in time for lunch.

Coach Sparks (our TSBVI liaison) will send all details coming closer to the event. For now, mark you calendars for this exciting day!

Welcome New Board Members!

The Girls' School of Austin is proud to introduce two new members of our Board, Brett Smith and Kelly Mahmoud! We are excited to have their insight and expertise shape the future of our school, and we'd love for our community to get to know them.

Brett Smith is a proud father to GSA alums Lily (Class of 2020) and Charlotte (Class of 2023). He graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a Bachelor of Science in Business/Corporate Communications, and he received his MBA from The Citadel in Charleston, South Carolina. With his professional background in real estate brokerage and medical practice operations, Brett is dedicated to representing healthcare tenants and buyers in the commercial real estate space, ensuring they have the offices and facilities needed to provide quality care to their patients.

Kelly Mahmoud is a proud mother to GSA alums Maddy (Class of 2017) and Charlotte (Class of 2019). She graduated from The University of Texas at Austin with a BBA in Finance. She comes to the Girls' School of Austin with over 30 years of financial services experience and currently works as a financial advisor for Edward Jones. Kelly is also passionate about her Austin community, having served as treasurer of the Women’s Symphony League of Austin, the president of the UT Zeta Tau Alpha House Board, and the chair of the Finance Resource Committee at her local church.

Potential Water Service Impact

We want to make you aware of upcoming city work on the waterlines that may affect our service. Beginning this week, crews will be replacing the waterline on Sharon Lane as part of the South Tarrytown Water and Wastewater Renewal Project. While the city is working to minimize disruptions, there is a risk of emergency outages due to the instability of the existing line.

In the unlikely event that a water outage lasts longer than 30 minutes, we may need to contact you for an early pickup due to fire safety concerns and the loss of restroom and drinking water access. The project is expected to take 4-6 weeks, with possible additional time for testing.

We will continue to monitor the situation and keep you updated. Any unexpected early release situations will be communicated via email, ClassDojo, and our OneCall emergency alert system (text and phone call).  If you have not yet opted in to these alerts,  please take a moment right now and text the word, ALERT, to 22300. Thank you for your understanding and support!

Cardigan, Hoodie, and Sweatshirt Reminders

As the weather gets cooler here in Austin, we would like to remind everyone of our uniform policy regarding cardigans, hoodies, and sweatshirts:

  • Please ensure that all cardigans, hoodies, and sweatshirts are solid-colored; no words, patterns, or images are allowed.
  • Cardigans, hoodies, and sweatshirts with or without the GSA logo are acceptable. However, if there is another brand logo on the article of clothing, please ensure that it is ~2 or smaller.
  • All cardigans, hoodies, and sweatshirts worn on Monday must be navy, in compliance with our Dress Uniform code.
  • Please label all of your students' cardigans, hoodies, and sweatshirts with their name, as students tend to lose track of them throughout the day.

We Need Your Student's Health Forms!

IMPORTANT: Currently, we are missing 2/3rds of the required health forms for our students!

Please check the list here to see if we still need your form. (If you submitted your form and are still on this list, we apologize for the inconvenience, but we do need you to re-submit.)

Don't worry; we've made it easy for you to submit them! You can send them to Ms. Chandler via email, or simply send the paper version with your child. Our priority is to ensure we have the necessary health information for each student to provide a safe and supportive learning environment.

If we do not receive your child's health forms with current Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis from 2024, we will have to charge for the required Vision and Health screenings. The charges are as follows:

Vision Screening: $30

Vision and Hearing Screenings: $45

Vision, Hearing, and Scoliosis Screenings (Scoliosis screening is only required for 5th & 7th graders): $55

These screenings are required for Kinder, 1st, 3rd, 5th, 7th, and all new students.

We understand that some parents may have already submitted their forms, but we kindly request that you double-check and resubmit if necessary. Your cooperation is greatly appreciated in helping us maintain a healthy and safe school environment. If you have any questions or need assistance with the submission process, please don't hesitate to reach out to Ms. Chandler. We're here to help make this process as smooth as possible.
