The Girls’ School of Austin is currently conducting a search for its next Head of School. The Board of Directors, with assistance from RG-175 Search Firm and the appointed Head of School Search Committee, will hire new leadership beginning in the Fall of 2022. Interested applicants should contact RG-175 and view the Position Statement.

*This is an approximate schedule. Dates may change as a result of the quality and size of the applicant pool.

As the Search Committee continues recruitment and selection of finalists, the community has an opportunity to reflect on the qualities that make our school unique and how they factor into the role of the next Head of School. Your point of view is important; in the last stages of the search process you will have a chance to meet the final candidates and provide input on who is best to lead GSA.

The POV Series focuses on our identity as GSA based on feedback we heard during the community Discovery Meetings. These short, simple articles are meant to inspire curiosity, inquiry, dialogue, and excitement for what lies ahead. You can expect to see something every few weeks as we move closer to finalists visits next Fall.

POV 1 Leadership
Leadership, as defined by Merriam-Webster, is simple – it is the capacity to lead. Human perception of leadership, however, is far less direct or concise. Consider these observations:

“Leadership is a process of social influence, which maximizes the efforts of others, towards the achievement of a goal.” Kevin Kruse

“A leader takes people where they want to go. A great leader takes people where they don’t necessarily want to go, but ought to be.” Rosalynn Carter

“Leadership is a matter of how to be, not how to do it.” Frances Hesselbein

Consider the nuances of leadership. Take time to reflect on the type of leadership you’d like to see in the GSA’s next Head of School. What is your definition of leadership? Is it an outcome, or a way of being? Is it an innate characteristic or learned behavior? When have you been inspired by leadership?
